The floor pan was more rust than steel. And, the original owner had concealed an evil corrosion problem with clear packing tape, bondo and spray-paint. To make matters still worse (?) a battery sometime in the ancient past had disgorged its contents into the floor, and no apparent effort had been made to neutralize the acid or clean up the contaminants.
